Subject: Chico Mendez Activity
Hello, my name is Greg Shields and I am a high school Spanish teacher in Plano, Texas. Last year I came across the “Who Killed Chico Mendez?” activity on your website and immediately realized the implications it could have for my Spanish classes. I have translated the information into Spanish and have modified the activity. During our Environmental unit in level 3 Spanish, I had students work in groups to “investigate” portions of the information dealing with Chico Mendez, his life, his cause, his work as an environmental activist, and the information about the different suspects. Students were then redivided and had to share the information each “investigated” with the new groups. These discussions were done all in Spanish. In the end the students have to come up with a decision as to who they think did it, and then do a Spanish writing assignment. They write a series of cause and effect statements from Chico being the son of a rubber tapper through his assasination.
This was a wonderful activity and the students learned much as they used their Spanish. I am planning on sharing this lesson with the other teachers in my district this year. I just wanted to make sure that there is no problem with us including this activity from your website in our district curriculum.
Thank you for your time,
Greg
