Y9 Bar Code Yourself

This is an idea I have picked up from Tony Cassidy & Little Miss Sunshine of Geotastic so thanks a lot to them both.  I thought it was about time you become more interactive with the blog so this week your homework will be posted to the site.

  1. Click on the image above to go to the web site

  2. Click on the Bar Code and Bar Code yourself for you living in the UK

  3. Next scan yourself and make a note of your worth

  4. Now try some variations for different countries e.g. different weight, gender etc.  Make a note of your worth after you have scanned yourself.

  5. State what your bar code worth was for the UK and for the other country you have chosen.  Write a few sentences to explain why your bar code worth may be different to your original UK value.

  6. Leave a comment on the blog by clicking on the comment symbol above.  The comment will be moderated by myself before it appears on the blog. (State your first name and the first initial of your surname)

My first scan was a 14 year old, Britsh girl who was 5FT 2IN high and and weighed 45kg. She was worth $4.20.

My next person was a 14 year old Somalian girl who was 57inches high and weighed 39kg. She was worth $0.01.

I think the worth of the girls decreases because the Somalian girl is from a LEDC and has a high percentage of being lower educated, under nourished and not come from a good background. The british girl would have been properly educated and have the opportunity to be housed and well fed. This shows that the girl from Britain has a better and more expensive lifestyle than the Somalian girl.

Great to see you have replied so quickly Molly, well done for being the first. What do you mean by more and better? and is a more expensive lifestyle or ‘standard of living’ better? Just some questions to get you thinking 🙂

  3. 3 Lucy s March 2, 2007 at 6:37 pm

The first person i did was
    a female.
    14 years old.
    66 inches.
    and 98 pounds.
she was from the UK, and scanned as $4.11

the second person i did was
    a female
    14 years old
    60 inches.
    and 140 pounds.
she was from Sri Lanka and worth $o.41.

i think the reason that the first girl was worth more is because she is more educated and not from a LEDC background, the other girl will be worth less because she is from an LEDC area and likely to be uneduated and much less healthy. the british girl has a better standard of living and is fed better than the sri lankan girl.

i then tried both of these but varying to male, i found that i was worth much more as a male than i ever was as a female, i think this may be because they can do alot more, for example in Sri Lanka they can work better than the women, also in the UK the male was worth more and i believe this is because he would be stronger than the female.

After gigving in details that I was a 14 year olf female of 50 kg in weight, and 5 ft 2 in height, i acanned myself and found that I was worth $4.26.
I repaeted the process with a 14 yr old girl living in Nigeria, the same weight and height as me. She was worth only $0.09.
This great change in price may be to the fact that there is a lot of poverty in many areas in this LEDC country, where food, education and medicine is hard to afford by the poor. there are diseases in the counrty such as Malaria, Aids and HIV. Jobs are lso hard to find, and there is alot of prostituion and crime in the country.

    hiiiiiii ….

In my first scan i was a 14 year old, british girl who is 66 inches in height and weighed 105 pounds , i was worth $4.18.

in my second person i was a 13 year old from afghanistan , i was 64 inches in height and weighed 91 pounds , i was worth $0.91.

i have noticed that the british girl is worth alot more than the girl from afghanistan , i think this is because people who live in LEDC countries have less opportunities, and are not as well off, here in england we have better education and poverty here is alot less than poverty in afghanistan and there is a higher probablity that a afghanistan child will be malnourished and more prone to illness. This therefore increases the worth of people in a MEDC and decreases the worth of people living in a LEDC .

  6. 6 Clare A March 4, 2007 at 2:46 pm

My first scan was a 14 year old British girl, who was 5ft 3in and weighed 50 kg. I was worth $4.23.

The next scan i did was a 14 year old Rwandan girls, who was 5ft 3in and weighed 50 kg. She was worth $0.04.

I think that the Rwandan girl was worth less because she lived in an LEDC country. Because I live in Britain, i get a better education and am worth more because of it. Also because she lives in a developing country, her cost of living would be low.

  7. 7 Tope March 4, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Firstly I scanned myself in as a 13 year old Britsh female who weighed 112lbs. She was worth $4.22.

My second scan was a 21 year old Nigerian male who weighed 154lbs. He was worth $0.13.

Then I decided to scan a third person. I scanned myself the same as the first time but made myself Nigerian instead. She was worth $0.00. And I scanned myself in the same as the first time but made made myself a male. I was worth $5.87.

From my results I have come to the conclusion that males are worth more than females and in MEDCs people are worth more than in LEDCs. I think that this is because in countries like Britain there are laws on how much people can be paid. I think that men are worth more than women because there are certain things that people believe men can do but women can’t do.

  8. 8 Tania D March 4, 2007 at 7:29 pm

I created six barcodes and realised that men are always worth a higher amount of money than women. Is this because people think of men as the dominant gender?

I also realised that age affects the barcode, i tried an 88 year old, a 2 year old and a 21 year old. The 21 year old was worth $6.62, the 88 year old was worth $3.76 and the two year old was worth $0.87. I am not sure why this is as i would have thought the 2 year to be worth more, even though it’s life has just begun. However, the 88 year old is probably educated and wise which could be the reason.

Also I discovered that the person who came from the richer countries (America)of the world is worth more than a person who comes from a poor country (Ethiopia).

  9. 9 Evie F March 4, 2007 at 8:34 pm

when i first barcoded myself i was worth $4.12 a female aged 14 living in the uk wieghing 121 pounds and measured 62 inches heigh.

I then made up a person who was worth $0.13 this male was from gambia he was 10 years old, measured 39 inches heigh and weighed 110 pounds.

As you can see from the results the male living in gambia is worth much less than the female living in the uk. i think this is because the poverty in the country and the fact that it is an LEDC. this leaves the boy at a poor advantage with maybe a bad education bad helth but the girl in the uk is more likely to be healthy and in school.

Some excellent homeworks are now being posted.

    Lucy S
some very interesting work. I liked that you had decided to also find out if there was any differences between male and female. What do you mean males are better than females? I think you had better think a little more about the reasons as often the women do a lot more manual work on farms than some of the men, if this is what you meant by better!. Think again why the value may be much less.

    Joanne B
Interesting to see that you have picked up on the incidence of disease in Nigeria and how HIV and Malaria may affect the value. Well done.

    Rachel T
You chose Afghanistan as your second country so what do you think is the main reason for such a poor value except that it is an LEDC? War is currently a major factor to wealth. Remember we are talking about standard of living and quality of life which will be affected by conflict.

    Clare A
Your other bar code was for a girl in Rwanda again another country that is recovering from a war and also has a very high incidence of HIV and AIDS. How will this affect your bar code worth?

    Tope A
You have again picked up on the female/male relationship. Remember men are still paid more than females in the workplace in some areas. Do you think this is fair? Why are people in LEDC’s worth less on the bar code scan?

    Tania D
I was interested to see that you chose to look at how age will affect the worth of a person. I was pleased to see your analysis as to why someone who was two may be worth a lot less than someone who was 88. I also think it may be due to how productive a two year old is. Although both are dependants (in terms of economic activity) one is obviously more usefull to society if they are able to still look after themselves and they may be involved in the informal economy (e.g. baby sitting). Very interesting question though well done.

    Evie F
you have chosen two completely different people in terms of weight height and age. Do you think it is thus easy to compare countries. Think about doing the same exercise for the girl in UK with the same set of figures for the girl in Gambia and then do the same for the boy so that you can realy see the differences between the two countries and sexes. A good start though.

  11. 11 Olivia Flaherty (Lourdes) March 6, 2007 at 5:22 pm

First i barcoded myself and I was a female from the UK $4.20.

Secondly I barcoded someone else who was from an LEDC,I was a male from Cuba and was worth $0.33.

From my results i learnt that the less you wiegh and the smaller you are the lower you are priced.

  12. 12 Anna P March 6, 2007 at 5:56 pm

My First bar code was of a girl from the united kingdom, who when was scanned ended up at being woth $4.25. whos weight was 117 pounds and had a height of 5.4 feet.

I then did a barcode for a girl living in South Africa whos weight was 112 pounds and whos hight was 5.6.When scanned was showm at $1.25.

I think that there was a difference once scanned as in the uk many children are well educated not only that but are at an advantage when it comes to the amount of good food that is supplied, but more importantly is in close contact with a good clean water supply.also living in a house in the uk costs quite alot of money compared to what it may cost in Africs, especially the poorer areas who may not even have a house to live in.this is why i think that when my bar code was scanned it was a larger amount than the person in Africa as living in the uk offers many advantages unlike Africa so is why in thosse terms i was worth more.

  13. 13 Charlotte March 6, 2007 at 6:45 pm

When I first barcoded myself I was $4.07, a female living in the United Kingdom, 14 years of age, 60 inces and 101 pounds.

I then made up a person which was a Male, living in the United States, 36 years of age, 70 inches and weighs 128 pounds is $9.46.

Then however I barcoded another female living in Afghanistan, 88 years of age, 69 inches and weighs 70 pounds is $0.05.

Lastly I brcoded another male, 4 years of age, lives in Pakistan, is 21 inhes high an weighs 35 pounds is $o.36.

  14. 14 Sara Pellicci (Lourdes) March 6, 2007 at 7:18 pm

The first scan was of a 13 yr old female that lives in the UK, who is 65 inches and weighs 119 pounds. She was worth $4.22.

The second scan was a 14 yr old female, that lives in Bangladesh is 67 inches high and weighs 125 pounds. They are worth $0.19

I think that the reason why the girl from Bangladesh isn’t worth much is because she is from an LEDC, so she probably hasn’t had any chances in life like a good education or going places with friends. She probably has to help with her brothers or sisters or help around the house.

Where as the the British girl has been brought up properly and given the chance of a good education and to have a laugh with friends.

when i went on bar code myself i was an average 13 years old girl and $4.23 which was good but when i tried a 13 years female that lives in congo dem rep is 57 inches heigh and weighs 081.5696649029982 pounds is : $0.05 which is very low because congo has now civil war so they have cut all food supplies and it dangerous to go out of the house am a healthy 13 years old girl but the one in a ledc coutry isn’t.

i also choose a 15 years old male that lives in sri lanka he’s family had lost there fishing port so after the tsunmi he had no food supplies and were he was washed away to didnt find his family for a long time so now he lives poor with no money and no enough food to nutrient him that can fight away any diesese

Firstly i scanned myself, the scan showed a 13 year old, british female that weighs 50kg and that is 5ft 3 inches was priced at $4.22.

Secondly i scanned a different person, a 13 year old Jamaican female who weighs 50kg and that is 5ft and 1 inch was surprisingly priced a $0.53.

I found out that there is a large difference in prices between the two. There is such a difference because the country Jamaica isnt as wealthy as Britain. this reduces the value of the person.

    🙂 🙂 🙂

  21. 21 Riaana (rp) Lourdes March 6, 2007 at 9:04 pm

I inserted the results female,14,united kingdom,67 inches and 8.5 pounds is $3.61 and i did the same information with a male and it came out as $5.38.
I think that a man is worth more because in society he is seen as more important and that even in todays modern world the man is still the dominant figure in some ways.
I also did the same for male and female in zimbabwe and the man also had a higher price as especially in zimbawbwe the times are behind and they feel that men are more important than women.
In zimbabwe when i ommited the same results for myself apart from that i was from zimbawbe i had a price of $0.34. This is due to zimbabwe being a lower economically developed country and they have a lower quality of living and bad quality agriculture due to droughts and climate, whereas in the United Kingdom they would have a higher quality of life.
    (1) i learnt that an MEDC would have more value than an MEDC

  22. 22 Sarah G March 6, 2007 at 9:53 pm

My first scan was of a British girl, aged 14, 100 pounds and 62 inches.
    The results were $4.21.

For my seconed scan I used the same details, but instead this time it was a boy.
    It scaned to $5.84

I think that the price rose higher because it is said that men have more advantages from things like being stronger, or being able to grow taller than women.

Again, for the third scan, i used the same details as the british girl, but this time she came from Ethiopia.
The price had decreased greatly as the price came to $0.01.
The results came out very low compared to those who lived in the UK. I believe that this is because the person came from an LEDC country, meaning that she could be malnourished, have no access to education or health, not being able to get a job in the future, poor shelter and having a high risk of catching disease.

  23. 23 Billie D March 7, 2007 at 8:38 am

I first did me and I was worth $4.25. Then I did a 65 yr old female, who was from Cambodia, 4ft 5 inches, and weighed 47 kilograms, she was worth $0.04. This shows that people in a LEDC are worth less.

  24. 24 msrichards March 7, 2007 at 11:01 am

    Olivia FL
A good choice of comparisson country Olivia. How do you know it is due to the size of the two people and not the economic development of each country?

    Charlotte S
What conclusions can you draw about the different worth of the people you have chosen. Look at other peoples explanations so you can think of reasons.

    Sara P
A good example to use but think a little more about why their worth may be different. Take care with the words you use I am sure the girl from Bangladesh has parents who care for her and have brought her up properly. Think about access to education and how difficult it may be to face severe flooding in that country.

    Kate BB
I think by now you know that you need to explain your comments and compare with another person in an LEDC

    Tameka O
An interesting example to use however you were to use an LEDC example which I think you now realise. Why do you think the women will be worth more than the men? If you read the rest of the comments it seems to be the other way round. It may be interesting to use this idea to compare MEDC’s

    Tiffany O
Well done Tiffany you have used examples we have talked about in class to explain the differences. Good linkage back to work we did on the Earthquakes and Volcano Unit for the Sri Lankan fisherman but what was the worth you forgot to mention.

    Chioma N
Good Chioma why do you think that Jamaica is not as wealthy? Do you think it has anything to do with the UK. We will be looking into these reasons soon.

    Riaana P
Good Riaana you have looked at both angles here the issue of differences between sexes and also between MEDC and LEDC. You have also given good reasons. Do you think there is likely to be more equality in MEDC’s between the sexes than LEDC’s. Something to think about.

  25. 25 Elizabeth B March 7, 2007 at 11:22 am

    hello miss
i put myself in and i was worth $4.25
the new person lived in Haiti, he was 13 he weighed 60 kilograms and was 4ft 11inches. he was worth $0.22
i think this happened because of where he lived and how much he weighed for his height. this shows that people living in LEDC countries are worth a lot less.

  26. 26 Caitlin W March 7, 2007 at 11:27 am

I first barcoded myself as a 14 year old girl from Britain. I was worth $4.22.

After this i did a 14 year old girl from vietnam. With the same details as myself. I was now worth $0.26

i think the reason that the first girl was worth more is because she is more educated and not from a LEDC background, the other girl will be worth less because she is from an LEDC area and likely to be uneduated and much less healthy. the british girl has a better standard of living and is fed better than the girl from vietnam.

  27. 27 tanya b March 7, 2007 at 11:39 am

I fisrt did my self. I came out with a value of $4.07. I tyhen did a 65 year old femal living in tajikstan. I came out with a value of $o.o9. By doing this i found that the older you are and if you live in a LEDC. You are worth less than someone who is educated and young and living in an MEDC

  28. 28 Michaela M March 7, 2007 at 11:47 am

I entered the information for a 14 year old girl who was 4’11 and weighed 105 pounds (my information) into the barcode scanner, using 4 different countries.
First of all I entered the information for the United Kingdom, and found that I was worth $4.26.
Next, I tried it for Azerbaijan. I found that I was worth $0.25, which is considerably less than for the UK. I think that this is because it is a much poorer country (LEDC), and they have much worse lifestyles and living conditions.
Then I entered the information for Ethiopia, another LEDC and one of the poorest countries. I found that I was worth $0.01, which is not surprising, as it is a very poor country with very bad living conditions.
Lastly, I tried it with the United States, the richest country in the world. I was worth $6.69, which, again, is not surprising. The USA is the richest and most powerful country in the world, and most of the people living there have good living conditions and lifestyles. They have enough money to live on, unlike some of the other countries, the LEDCs, and that is why I was worth more there (and in the UK, another MEDC).

  29. 29 Tara W March 7, 2007 at 4:22 pm

First I entered the information of a 13 year old girl who lives in the UK is 59 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds. This was worth $4.23. I then entered in the details of a 14 year old girl who lives in Somalia is 62 inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. This was worth $0.02.

I think that there was such a large difference in worth because the English girl (living in an MEDC) would have had a larger chance to have an education and then get a job. She will also be well fed and looked after. However the Somalian girl (living in an LEDC) would not have these opportunities and therefore would be worth a much lower amount.

When changing the gender of my people but nothing else I learnt that the value goes up. I think that this is because men are generally seen as being stronger and more able to do manual labour.

  30. 30 Olita W- LOURDES March 8, 2007 at 6:39 pm

When I barcoded myself,I was a 13 year old female girl form U.K. My height is 66 inches and i weigh 10 pounds and worth $3.86.
I then chose a 9 yr old female who lives in St.lucia. Her height is 61 inches and weighs11 pounds and worths $0.68.
I thought this would be a good variation to choose from, because each girl was from a LEDC and MEDC.The 10year old who lives in St.lucia only worths $0.68 because there is alot of advertisement and trade borught into the Carribean From America which is a big country. They also have alot of obesity problems that have developed over the past few years. From this, children in St.lucia have become use to this trend, this is why my person weighs more over the average weight of a 9 year old. Few children in St.Lucia are underweight because there parents are unemployed or low income and are paid quite low.
However, the child from Great Britain is more wealthy because their parents may have a solid job or on child benefits.
THe first child is from a MEDC country and the second child is from LEDC country

  31. 31 Annabelle N (Lourdes) March 8, 2007 at 7:32 pm

When I bar-coded myself I was $4.23, a 14 year old female living in the UK, weighing 110 with the height of 63 inches high.
I did the same thing again but with a 14 year old female living in Vietnam weighing 105 with the height of 62 inches high and is worth $0.26.
There is a big difference between the UK and Vietnam. The UK is a MEDC country which there is more education, clean fresh water and good food. It is easier to get a job in countries like the UK. But in LEDC countries there is hardly any fresh water, not much education is given, not much food, this is because people in LEDC countries cannot afford medicine, fresh water, or food. There is a lot of diseases in LEDC countries but no one can afford a doctor or anyone to help fight these diseases.

  32. 32 samantha c (star) March 8, 2007 at 7:53 pm

    5 feet 1 inches
    112 pounds

    4 feet 11 inches
    100 pounds

This shows that people that live in LEDC will be worth less, then someone who would live in a MEDC.
This would properly be because LEDC do not have main things like health care, Infrastructure and schools. Also as there is a war going on in Afghanistan, there would also be less health care as there are more injured people to be looked after.

I also typed in these details:

    5 feet 1 inches
    112 pounds

So this also shows that man are worth more then women, I think this is because people think that men are more dominate then women.

  33. 33 Katy Lucy (LOURDES) March 8, 2007 at 7:55 pm

When I barcoded myself, I was a Female living in the UK with the height of 61 inches and weighs 121 pounds and I am worth $4.20
After that I barcoded a 8 year old female living in Afghanistan weighing 108 pounds with the height of 53 inches and is worth $0.05
I can see that a person living in MEDC will cost more than a Person living in a LEDC country because the girl living in a MEDC country has more education and much more money than the girl living in a LEDC. The girl living in a MEDC country can get a good job in the future but the girl living in a LEDC wont because she does not have any money therefore she wont live as long as the LEDC.

  34. 34 manuella (lourdes) March 8, 2007 at 9:03 pm

i scanned my self 14 year old female that lives in the united kingdom, is 63 inches heigh, and ways, 088.1834215167548 punds and is worth $4.15, then i scanned the exact same figures but a girl that lives in the philippines and she was worth $0.60.

i think this is due to the structure of the country, because some parts of the phillippines are LEDC, were as the united kingdom is a MEDC.

I then entered another set of details and the details were: a 13 year old female who lives in Jamaica with the height of 63 inches with the weight of 111 pounds and she was worth $0.56
I choose a LEDC to see the difference in how much different we are economically to Jamaica and this is a huge difference and very surprising. It makes me relies how much of a different person I would be in Jamaica.

  36. 36 Ziede (Lourdes) March 8, 2007 at 9:56 pm

When i barcoded myself i was a female, 14 , From the UK, 70inches and was worth $4.25.
Then i barcoded a female, from Russia, 70 inches tall but she was only worth $0.72.
I was quite surprised by the results becasue all the measurements were the same as mine but yet she was worth alot less.
I think the reason for this because Russia is a LEDC, even though it is the biggest country. I think the girls lifestyle wouldn’t include education, but if it did it wouldnt be very good and wouldnt lead her to a good future. Even if the girl would have a chance of going to school i think she would choose not too because then and there her family would need money so she would be working at a young age, to keep herself and her family running. Nowing quite a bit about russia, i know that teenagers are allowed to work in cotton mills from the age of 15 maybe even earlier, and the employers take the chance of cheap labour. I think i am work more that the russian girl because i live in a MEDC. This means i am able to get a very good education and have a very wide and guarenteed opertunity in reaching my goals in the future. i think it also depends on the the country that we ive in and how wealthy our country is.

    hey miss richards 🙂
when i barecoded myself, i was a girl age 14 from the United Kingdom, i was 77 inches high and weighed 120 pounds.I was worth a staggering $3.87.I then barcoded a man aged 21 years, that lives in cuba, he is 88 inches heigh and ways 100 pounds. He was worth $0.31.

when i choose my second person to barecode was not sure weather, cuba was in a LEDC or MEDC this is because when i went to this country it seemed, very beautiful viws friendly and happy people. But then we gt taken to the places were people lived in such poverty, feeding on sugar cans and not well nutritioned.

I came to the conclusion based on the price of the Man living in Cuba, that this country is a LEDC because he was worth $0.31 and me living in a MEDC was $3.87.
although reading from over people comments it seems that Men are more expensive than Women but in this case it is not maybe this man is not educated enough for a job and maybe does not get enough money. Many men in cuba ride the horses getting small fairs and i dont think this is enough to provide food for his children.
