Y9 Globalization of Fashion

Today we have started our globalization unit and kicked it off by looking at Fashion.  Some of you managed to have a go at the Sims Sweatshop activity.  For those of you who didn’t get a chance to play during class then click to see how many you can make.

Here are some web sites where you can find out more about globalization and the fashion industry.

Clean Clothes Campaign These people have kindly lent me a DVD that I will be showing you soon.  The Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) is an international campaign, focused on improving working conditions in the global garment and sportswear industries.  The show below shows how much money is spent on the making of a trainer (remember this is in Euro’s)

Global Eye focus on fashion – This explains the process of globalisation of the fashion industry and explains the global chain of production and Export Processing Zones.

Global Exchange – Another movement to campaign for a sweat free world.  Lots of info about particular companies such as Nike and Gap and the conditions under which their products are made.

I found this game interesting but difficult because I was under presssure due to the short time in which I had to make 3 trainers. By the end of each day I would have only made 2 trainers and have my total wage decreased to $3.02.
I then thought about the people who make trainers for a living in other countries such as China. And how they have to work long hours and buy their own food and drink. They also are given time limits and docked for not making enough shoes. It was even harder to make more trainers due to my energy level decreasind every so often. This afftected my the way I saw the trainer as i was getting more and more ‘weak’ and ‘tired’. By the end of the week I was left with $0.01. This game showed me a glimpse of what people making trainers for cheap wages go through and how difficult it is in the long hours in whiuch they have to work

I played the game and found it quite impossible to make 3 shoes in 1 day [1 minute] I was told continuesly that i needed food and drink! I was faced with some descisions like whether to buy my eldest son a new pair of shoes. when i didnt have enough energy the shoe went out of focus, so i found it a bit harder!

I found this stimulation really hard as making shoes entails alot of work. When workers question their pay or question their work they are docked wages, this affects family life as they are working to stay alive. The workers work long hours with little money and short deadlines to finish the work. The workers can hardly survive on what they get payed. If they don’t work as hard as their body can possibly make them, then they loose their source of income. Overall this game made me realise the stress the workers are put under to make the trainers, how hard it is for them, and how little they get in return for their hard days work.

    Sweatshop Game

When i read the instructions i thought that this game would be easy! However, when i started playing i realised that actually its really hard to meet the deadline of the expected amount of shoes you have to make in the time given and especially when your energy levels decrease and then if your low on money then all you can do is, well, nothing!

Also with personal issues that you meet like, deciding to spend money on a pair of shoes for your son when they cost more than a daily pay all you can do is reject the offer leaving your son with wounded feet!

I now realise how hard it is to live on the minimum daily pay! Next time i buy a new pair of trainers i will realise how much effort has gone into making them!

i read the rules and it sounded like an easy enough game , however it wasnt easy at all and as your energy level got less , the trainer that you was making became more and more blurry, therefore making it harder to see and therefore wasting time trying to fit it in the right place.

i was never actually able to complete the required amount of trainers. and at the end i only had $0.18 in my money pot.

but when buying trainers for myself i never consider how much work that actually goes into making them , and i dont really appreciate it. this helped me to think more. also it was very hard because as well as the pay being low .money was being taken out for my kids and for my energy levels. this also made the game really hard.

when i began to play the game i found it impossible to make i pair of shoes neve mind 3!and also it was hard as you kept being interupted to eat or drink which cost food which i think isnt fair for the workers as its just another distraction especially since u need to work more to make more money and if your interrupted it means less money and even if you did want to buy somthing that would cost money as well, meaning the wages you earned in the first place are being thrown away as quickly as anything.i also found that as your enery went down the picture began to blur meaning there was less chance of making more shoes and in conclusion being able to make less money.

when i started playing this game i wasn’t sure what to expect, finally got the hang of making the shoe, but then i saw that i could by food, i didn’t realise until after i didn’t buy the food that it gave me energy to work and it was harder to work woth less energy.
i wasn’t very success full at playing this game and i ended up with $0.11 in my money pot not being able to gain any energy and i was sent home as i could no longer work very well.

I found this game tedious and repetitive and got bored with it quite quickly, but I guess that is nothing compared to the work that the real workers have to do on a daily basis.
The game was challenging, and I only managed to last a week (7 days), and I came across a number of challenges/problems that the workers face: buying food and drink, buying clothes for family, working overtime for no extra pay and affording the rent.
It was hard to keep my energy up and still have money to pay the rent, and consequently I still owed money at the end of the week. It helped me understand the terrible work and pay that the sweatshop workers have, and the bad lives that they lead because of this.

Hi, there. Working in the sim sweat shop was hard and i failed to make 3 shoes in a day so my wages were docked by about $4 because i only made 1 sports shoe. I do not think factory work is for me.
It helped me to understand how much hard work people in those poorer countries go to, to earn a living. I was beaten up because i joined a union like they would be. It also shows how they don’t have a ny human rights compared to people in the western world. Hope its in the right place this time.

At first i fought the game would be easy. But it was hard to meet the expected deadlines.
it began to get repetative and i soon got bored.
The game made realise how hard and stressful life must be for the factory workers. It also made me relise that the workers get next to nothing for all the time and energy they put into thier work.
I wouldn’t like to be put in that situation.

Before I played the game, I believed that it would be pretty simple. However, from the game, I soon found that for these people, having a working life like this would be tough. It was things like energy levels which slows you down and limits your ableness to make more shoes. At the begining, it may seem simple, but as you look into it deeper, you soon realise the reality of what people have to go through.

i started to play the game and i got the target of 3 shoes, it is quiet annoying when your trying to make the shoes in a hurry and you keep getting distrubed by the messages. i finally lost with no energy and £0.25. although i did last a long time, it made me realise how hard it would be in real life for a little amount of money, which i think is very unfair because now adays every one should get paid fairly.

I found this game to be a good look into the experience of working in a sweatshop. It was very difficult! On my first attempt I didn’t even last a day in the sweatshop. And after paying for essentials like food and drink I was making very little money from my job. The working conditions in these factories are terrible. The factory forced me to work overtime with no pay increase, threatening to fire me if I did not agree. When I agreed to join a Union I was mugged by a group of men, demonstrating that these workers have no rights. Eventually I was fired because I was not able to meet my quota of shoes.
